Walker Lake is a terminal lake, meaning it has no outlet, and is a remnant of the much larger ancient Lake Lahontan. Historically, the Walker River flowed into the lake, but diversions for agriculture have dramatically reduced the river's flow, causing the lake to shrink and its salinity to increase significantly. This has led to ecological damage, including the loss of its Lahontan cutthroat trout fishery.
